I was born into house number forty seven, and at the age of forty seven, like most people out there, having spent many years working in a variety of jobs, gaining experience and overcoming life's challenges, its only now I am getting the opportunity to fly. I have always been an artist, matter of fact, on my first day at school, I ran toward a little wooden easel, I instantly felt a deep sense of peace. There was a box drawer attached to that little easel where I kept all my brushes and crayons. Brushes that were so over worked, they began to look like chimney brushes, which meant I rarely painted inside the lines. It was probably as early as this, I developed a love for a raw and expressionistic style of mark making. By the time I was sixteen I was blessed to have the best art teacher on the planet. With Eamon Bradley's encouragement, I started to flourish, and it became obvious I would always work within the creative field, although at times wearing a variety of artistic hats. After university in Belfast, off I went to London, and became a stylist with a company who had strong links to major fashion houses. They worked collaboratively with designers, on a new collection every season. I had studied graphic design in Belfast, however it was a "hands on" creative desire that needed to be satisfied in me, and becoming a stylist, and working with some of the best in the world, seemed an obvious choice. An artistic job, that would become my bread and butter whilst my painters eye continued to develop subliminally. I learnt a lot watching the art directors create living sculpture and fantasy with hair. I was also enthralled by observing some of the world's most talented make up artists. For sure my love of portraiture was cemented during this time. For personal reasons and health challenges my time in London came to an end after many years of working, living and loving there, and a new chapter of healing and growth began back in Ireland. I started to paint again in Ireland and it became a form of therapy, leaning into my natural ability and trying not to focus on my disabilities. Many artists have said in the past, creating art is life saving and I will add my voice to theirs, it certainly is. It was also being back here I prescribed myself poetry. Sitting in silence and reading poetry, is hypnotic, the wave of calm through one's mind, truly sublime. I am becoming a stronger writer as well as a full time painter. It feels necessary to push forward with both, I find that my visual and written expression feed each other, so when I feel the urge to do one or the other, I go ahead and dive in. At this age I am not consumed with failure or mistakes. As my grandfather used to say, if you never made a mistake you never made anything! I invite you to browse my evolving and growing collection, and I do hope some of my work speaks to you and perhaps you will fall in love with certain paintings, and specific words and sentences will hit a note with you. In recent years, due to the fact we are well into the digital age, I often hear other artists, writers, singers and everyone within the arts say, it is increasingly crucial that human beings lead the way in creativity. As more than any other industry art promotes much more than something aesthetically appealing, it celebrates individualism, self discovery, self acceptance, develops empathy for ones self and others. A combination of a visual stimulus which we feel, and that produces a powerful impact. A spiritual experience, for the artist and the viewer. I will always be excited by the variety of customers I speak to, of all ages and backgrounds who say they are drawn to certain pieces, for various reasons. As the expression goes everyday is a school day and with that said, I am eager to get back to the school of my studio of learning, development and continuous exploration. As we bid summer farewell, I embrace this autumn and winter with all my heart.
